Dr. Logan Sorenson Recognized as a “DARPA Riser”

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has selected HRL Laboratories’ Dr. Logan Sorenson as a “DARPA Riser,” one of approximately 50 early-career researchers who demonstrate the potential to be future technology leaders. During “DARPA Rising,” an event held on September 9, 2015, in St. Louis, Mo., Sorenson will have the opportunity to deliver a poster presentation to the DARPA director and technical team.

Sorenson, who works in the Sensing Technologies Department of HRL Laboratories’ Sensors and Materials Laboratory, will present, “Towards Spatial and Temporal Self-Awareness in Point-Like Objects.” Sorenson says that, in an age of technological convergence, the need for accurate positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) capabilities in smaller, lower cost packages is ever growing. “Recent advances in miniature PNT technology herald an imminent paradigm shift in how objects are located,” he says. His poster presentation will introduce key technologies that enable the future of self-navigating devices, as well as myriad potential applications.

Immediately following “DARPA Rising,” Sorenson will attend DARPA’s three-day event, “Wait, What? A Future Technology Forum,” together with 1,400 scientists, engineers, and innovators. “It’s a great opportunity to share our work on microscale positioning, navigation, and timing technologies with the broader technical community,” he says. “I’m very excited to present at the conference, to listen to and interact with other visionary technologies, and to participate in the workshops and breakout sessions that will guide the future path of many technological areas.”

Sorenson, who in 2013 received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, was nominated for this honor by DARPA Program Manager Dr. Robert Lutwak. “I’m humbled to be recommended by Dr. Lutwak, who is currently spearheading DARPA’s micro-PNT umbrella, to represent the micro-PNT community at this conference,” Sorenson says.
