800 AND GROWING
MALIBU, Calif., October 8, 2013—HRL Laboratories, LLC, announced today that it has obtained its 800th and 801st patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
The landmark patents were issued for the inventions titled “Three-dimensional (3D) object recognition system using region of interest geometric features” and “Method and apparatus for waveform generation.” The first invention provides for a novel way of recognizing objects in three dimensions using computer based systems and programs, while the second invention provides a new way to generate wave forms using a photonic oscillator and an optical heterodyne synthesizer.
An independent research and development company located in Malibu, California, HRL reached this milestone in less than 16 years in operation. Organized in December 1997 as a limited liability company from the former Hughes Research Laboratories, Inc., HRL began inventing with a clean slate. The company’s first patent under its new name was issued on September 12, 2000. In the last year, HRL was awarded an average of six patents each month.
