HRL to Develop Revolutionary Lightweight Structural Materials on DARPA’s MCMA Program

MALIBU, Calif. September 22, 2010—HRL Laboratories, LLC, is leading a university team in developing new lightweight materials that will dramatically exceed the mechanical and functional capabilities of existing engineered materials in the Materials with Controlled Microstructural Architecture (MCMA) Program, sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

The goal of the MCMA program is to significantly improve engineered material properties by controlling their “architectures” at all appropriate scales. The HRL team will focus on developing a new set of architecture design principles that can be applied within the material from the nano- to the macroscale.

“These new architected materials may literally form the foundation of future lightweight structures and could open the door to a wide range of materials with diverse applications, including energy conversion and consumer products,” said Dr. William Carter, manager of the Bio- and Nanomaterials Technologies Department at HRL and MCMA lead.
