HRL Researcher Selected to Participate in NAE's 2010 Frontiers of Engineering Symposium

MALIBU, Calif., June 25, 2010—HRL Laboratories researcher Dr. William Carter will participate as one of 87 of the nation’s brightest young engineers in the National Academy of Engineering’s 16th Annual U.S. Frontiers of Engineering Symposium, September 23-25, at the IBM Learning Center in Armonk, N.Y.

Selected from a diverse group of engineers ages 30 to 45 representing industry, academia and government and nominated by fellow engineers and organizations, Carter was selected from approximately 265 nominated applicants.

The symposium was established to bring together the nation’s most promising young engineers to discuss multidisciplinary ways of leading the country into the economy of tomorrow, according to NAE president Charles M. Vest. “As we face the challenges the next century brings, we will rely more than ever on innovative engineers,” he said.

The symposium will examine cloud computing, autonomous aerospace systems, engineering and music, and engineering inspired by biology, according to the NAE.

Carter joined HRL in 1999 and is currently manager of Bio and Nanomaterials Technologies in HRL’s Sensors and Materials Laboratory. He received his BA in physics from the University of Colorado and his MS and PhD in applied physics from Harvard University.
