HRL Scientist Honored with NASA Space Act Board Award

PASADENA, Calif., October 27, 2009—HRL senior scientist Dr. Jeong Sun-Moon was honored at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory today with a NASA Space Act Board Award for participating on a team that developed a wireless technology that has enhanced sensing capabilities.

Moon was honored with other team members, Kyung-Ah Son of JPL and Nicolas Prokopuk of the Naval Air Warfare Center. Each team member was presented with a certificate of recognition and shared a cash prize.

The technology, "Wireless GaN-Based Micro Chemical Sensor Nodes for Sensor Centric Networks," was developed in 2004. The technology is a system for detecting chemical and biological substances, and comprises a plurality of sensing units or nodes, each of which is able to transmit information related to the sensed substance on a specific frequency. The GaN-based sensor nodes can be used for monitoring chemical species in harsh environments.

A US patent on this technology was issued in July 2008.

Annually, NASA awards scientists across the nation with the Space Act Board Awards, established with the passage of the Space Act in 1948. Millions of dollars have gone to thousands of innovators who have developed technologies that have enhanced the nation's space program and individual citizens' quality of life.
