HRL Laboratories Recognized for Water and Energy Conservation Efforts

MALIBU, Calif. February 6, 2009—HRL Laboratories was recognized by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and Southern California Edison for its water and energy conservation efforts in 2008.

As part of the Metropolitan Water District's "Save Water, Save a Buck" program, HRL implemented a number of water conservation initiatives that save tens of thousands of gallons of water annually. The program was developed to help local businesses conserve water usage in a region accustomed to draught and water shortages. The MWD estimates that nearly one third of the water used in Southern California is used by businesses.

Companies that implement approved water-conserving technologies and programs as part of "Save Water, Save a Buck" are eligible for significant rebates from the MWD.

HRL was recognized for "exemplary service and outstanding achievement in water conservation" as a member of the program. The company implemented high-efficiency water-free urinals in 2008, which can save up to 40,000 gallons of water per urinal annually. In addition, about 7 million gallons of recycled water are used each year to irrigate the company's 72-acre property.

HRL also received a significant rebate from Southern California Edison for its efforts in energy conservation in 2008. The company installed variable speed drives, or VSDs, to nine air handler fan motors at its Malibu facilities. The fan motors originally operated at 100% throughout the year, totaling 8,736 hours of power and energy consumption. With the VSDs in place, the company was able to set the fan motors to run at 50% on weeknights and during the weekends, reducing energy use during 5,616 hours annually.
